For this illustration, my goal was to create a book cover for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. For this piece, I planned to use inspiration from the symbols that made up the Deathly Hallows from the book; the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. I also drew some inspiration from the movie adaptation of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part One to help me draw further inspiration through an important part of the story. Within the book, the Deathly Hallows are important magical objects in "The Tale of Three Brothers", a wizard fairy tale that Harry and his friends encounter while looking for a way to finally defeat the Dark Lord Voldemort. This detail from the book is also featured within the movie, where it breaks into a story telling moment of its own. A sepia toned paper texture takes over the scene as we follow whimsical shadow puppet characters in a stylistic retelling of "The Tale of Three Brothers". Further research I did lead me to learning more about silhouette animation work of Lotte Reiniger, who would make animations with paper silhouettes. This inspired me to make a design that gave a nod to a paper cutout effect and with the paper texture, the retelling of the tale as well. To tie the symbol of the Deathly Hallows together, I added a textured star effect to add a magical effect to the piece. I also made the decision to put Harry's glasses onto the piece as well, which helped me link the book cover to the character of Harry Potter. By combining those elements, I felt this was the best way to capture the whimsical retelling of this important tale that would play a significant part in Harry's journey.
